Jay-Z’s beef with Nas
The rivalry between Nas and Jay-Z started back in 1996 when Jay-Z asked Nas to make a guest appearance on a song for Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt album and Nas refused. The two didn’t escalate the beef until after the death of Notorious B.I.G. in 1997. After B.I.G.’s passing, the title for the king of new york was up for grabs and both Nas and Jay-Z felt they were the heir to the throne. Jay-Z brought several of his associates from Roc-A-Fella into the beef, all of them taking shots at Nas. The New York Radio station, Hot 97, took votes from their listeners to see which rapper was the king of New York. Nas’ “Ether” and “Stillmatic” diss tracks were put up against Jay-Z’s “Takeover” and “Supa Ugly”. Nas came out on top with 58% of the votes, Jay-Z only received 42% of the votes. Both rappers continued to have commercial success after the battle and some feel that it was a draw.
Jay-Z and Nas have shown respect for each other in interviews, comparing it to a world title boxing match. The two ended the beef and decided to work together, Nas signed to Jay-Z’s label, Def Jam. He released “Hip Hop Is Dead” as his first album under Def Jam. Jay-Z is featured on the song “Black Republican”.
