Kanye West’s Album Graduation Outsells 50 Cent
Kanye West’s Album “Graduation” has officially outsold 50 Cent’s album “Curtis”. Graduation debuted at number 1 on the billboard 200, selling 957,000 copies, while Curtis came in somewhat far behind at 691,000 copies. 50 Cent however, is not willing to admit defeat. He has made claims that Def Jam, Kanye’s Record Label, bought Kanye’s records just to boost his sales figures.
Prior to the soundscan results, 50 Cent vowed to retire if Kanye sold more records than him. He has since retracted the statement and made no mention of it. Instead he had the following to say, “I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years, Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week. This marks a great moment for hip-hop music, one that will go down in history.”
Kanye West celebrated his victory over 50 Cent with Beyonce, Jay-Z and P Diddy at GQ’s 50th anniversary party on September 18th. When asked to comment on selling more records than 50, Kanye said, “To be a champion, you’ve got to take out a champion, It feels overwhelming. Everyone is coming up to me and telling me how proud they are of me. My music is really inspirational and I really made it for the people. I really understood that in this Internet age people are their own superstars … the best bet that we had was to make a soundtrack to their own lives.”
