Snoop Dogg (Born Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.) was born on October 20th, 1971 in Long Beach, California. He was nicknamed “Snoopy” as a child by his mother because he often watched Charlie Brown cartoons. When he began recording snoop took on the name Snoop Doggy Dogg, which he would shorten to Snoop Dogg in 1996 after leaving Death Row Records and signing to No Limit Records. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and became a member of the Rollin’ 20’s Crips in Long Beach. After being convicted on a cocaine conspiracy charge snoop spent three years in and out of prison. With the encouragement of older Crips members who recognized Snoop’s natural musical ability snoop began his career as a rapper making homemade rap tapes with his cousin Nate Dogg and his best friend Warren G.
